On top of the world...

We are off to see the Edinburgh Castle today. We caught the bus into the city and as we drew near we saw the castle stuck on top of a mountain. Nana asked how were we to get up there, and I offered to dig a burrow but then noticed it was all rock, hard rock.

To get to the castle we walked up the Royal Mile (High Street). There were lots of little shops that Nana kept looking in as we were buying presents, my lips are sealed - well actually they are stitched up. Near the castle we came across a shop that was also a museum and working Mill that produced the tartan cloth. We went inside and saw the working machines which were rather hypnotising as the shuttle went back and forth.

We had some Lunch in another building which was a Whiskey Distillery. Nana had Parsnip Soup and she actually liked it. We have been eating some interesting food on this adventure, Black Pudding and Haggis have been on the breakfast menu.

As we entered the Castle we can see how easily it could be defended because of the high walls and the narrow enterance. There were three gates people had to enter by. The area inside the castle was quite large and you could see where they had used the rocks sticking out of the ground as part of their wall. There were museums and memorials everywere and Poppa found some medals that had the family name. Along the parapets there were lots of guns. One of them was fired at one o'clock as a time reminder. It was loud and I am glad Nana was not taking a picture of me in the barrel at that time.

We then walked through Old Town and back down the Royal Mile and there was this house sticking out into the street. We went to have a look and it was the John Knox house. Poppa said he was an important man in the development of the church in Scotland. We went to have a look and found that the cielings were quite low, the walls were about a meter thick and it felt like a burrow. Even Nana had to duck at times. We went into the study where I tried to look studious. Poppa really looked the part though.

Afterwards we went for a tour of the underground vaults under South Bridge. Some thought it was scary and spooky but I just thought it was sad especially when I had heard the stories. During the great fire in Edinburgh many people lost their life.

Love you all
Nugget
